Masculine Activities

Herbert was educated in New York and at fifteen went to Europe for two years to study. From 1874 to 1878 he attended Yale College where he was one of the founders of the Wolf’s Head senior society and a co-founder of the Yale News, the first college newspaper in the country. During summers at Roseland Cottage, the Bowen boys engaged in sports and other energetic outdoor activities that reinforced ideas of masculinity and class. Herbert and his brothers were avid hunters and organized hunting parties that included their sisters.
