Henry C. Bowen, Collector

The Third Tax District of New York, Bowen’s eventual appointment, included the port of Brooklyn as well as wealthy Brooklyn Heights, where the family lived. Three percent was typically the collector’s share, which was a very tidy sum in the Third Tax District of New York. Bowen’s tax box is on display in the conservatory of Roseland Cottage.
