Don’t live entirely in vain

Bowen planted hundreds of trees on the town common across the road from Roseland Cottage. In an address to the Woodstock Fair in 1875 he encourages others to do so too: “You can at least plant an elm or a rosebush every year, and you will not have lived entirely in vain.” This order of trees for the common includes elm, larch, hemlock, maples, sycamore, linden, and  twenty-five tulip poplars.
