Roseland Cottage

The Cellar

Roseland Cottage’s basement contains some interesting remnants of the systems that made life comfortable for the people who lived there. Henry Bowen seemed to have had an ever-growing passion for access to water. There are three cisterns in the cellar (and another one in the attic), each from a different time period. We know that he purchased water rights from his neighbors. Perhaps his need for water was because of his extensive flower and vegetable gardening combined with an ever-expanding household, and elaborate entertaining. The cellar, like the attic and outbuildings, are only on view to the public when we tour Behind the Scenes.
