Colossal!

This giant flag with thirty-eight stars—official from 1877 to 1890—was still flown at Roseland Cottage on July Fourth well into the 1960s. Too fragile to fly now, it’s part of Historic New England’s collection of the Bowens’ Independence Day decorations. Look closely to see Miss Constance’s croquet wickets on the lawn.
