Diplomat

Herbert Bowen, a graduate of Columbia Law School, practiced law with his brother-in-law, George C. Holt, prior to starting his diplomatic career in 1890 as U. S. Consul at Barcelona. He was appointed Minister Resident/Consul General to Persia in 1899. Two years later the position changed to Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. The Shah presented him with the Imperial Order of the Lion and Sun, displayed in a second floor bed chamber in Roseland Cottage. The central enamel of the larger breast star is missing. Herbert’s final appointment before he retired in 1905 was as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Venezuela.
