Grand Celebrations

Ellen and Henry Bowen entertained four Presidents at Roseland Cottage. Ulysses S. Grant was the first in 1870. Over the next twenty-four years, they welcomed Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford B. Hayes, and William McKinley. Local and national newspapers described the invitation only receptions Ellen and Henry hosted for their special guests on July 3 in elaborate detail. The events featured outdoor dining illuminated with lanterns.
