Hall Stand

Promoters of the Gothic style of architecture in the early nineteenth century advocated that the furnishings should complement the house.  Henry Bowen complied, purchasing whole suites of furniture in the Gothic style.  The tall piece here is a hall stand—a newly invented form, handy for hanging hats and coats and placing wet umbrellas at a time before hall closets were commonplace.
