Roseland Cottage

Integrity, Diligence, Discretion

Lincoln must have felt that Bowen, an early and strong supporter of the new Republican Party and owner of an influential newspaper, had helped him to victory in 1860, because he appointed him tax collector for the Third District of New York in recognition of his “Integrity, Diligence, and Discretion.” This original appointment now hangs in the hall of Roseland Cottage.
