Henry Chandler Bowen

Henry Chandler Bowen was born in 1813 in rural Woodstock, Connecticut. For five years (1834 to 1839), he worked as a clerk for Lewis and Arthur Tappan in New York. He was part of the nineteenth-century diaspora of young men from New England agricultural villages who relocated to cities to find work.
