George Washington

Clarence Bowen earned Masters and Doctoral degrees in history from Yale College.  In 1887, he served on the committee for the centennial celebration of George Washington’s inauguration. Afterwards, he edited the history of this celebration for publication. He became publisher and owner of The Independent in 1896, inheriting the paper from his father.
