Jane Stuart

Jane Stuart, from Ireland, was one of the women working for the Bowen family for whom we have some information. She first appears in the 1850 U.S. Census for Brooklyn, New York, as a member of the household. Jane is listed as twenty-two years old and described as “servant.” She appears in subsequent censuses, helping us understand that Jane devoted her working lifetime to the family. Her death was noted in the Putnam Patriot in 1916, describing her “more than sixty-five years” in the Bowen family. Our only photograph of Jane was taken later in her life, at the front door of Roseland Cottage.
