Miss Holt in the Garden

This picture, taken in the late 1890s, shows Lucy’s and Henry’s granddaughter Constance Holt in the garden. It also shows that the layout of the garden hasn’t changed. It is rare to have a garden that so perfectly survives with its elaborate original pattern intact. Notice the yucca plants in the right of the picture. Most gardeners today would be happy to have them removed, but they were prized as rare and exotic plants in the nineteenth century, and remain in the garden today.
