Mourning Portrait of Lucy

The painting over the mantel in the north parlor is Lucy Tappan Bowen, Henry’s first wife. She died in 1863, just weeks after their tenth child Winthrop was born. This is a classic Victorian mourning portrait: eyes are raised heavenward, Lucy has an angelic quality, and she is portrayed as a very young woman. She was only thirty-eight when she died.
