No Smoking. No Cards.

In 1831, Bowen joined Woodstock’s first temperance society and remained  “true to my promise in spite of the temptations which surrounded me . . . intoxicating drinks of all kinds together with cigars and tobacco.” This note in Roseland’s south parlor written in 1889, prohibits card playing and smoking “on my premises.”
