I Solemnly Promise
When Clarence went to Yale College, his father asked him to sign a pledge to refrain from a variety of activities that were not considered respectable in the mid-nineteenth century. These included “the use of all intoxicating drink, from smoking or chewing tobacco, from attending any theater or opera . . . attending any regatta, or horse race or vising any gambling place . . . August 4th 1869”
