Soldiers, Cups, Swans, and Lions

The bookcase in Ned’s room has an assortment of family treasures: toy soldiers found in the attic at Roseland, a silver cup presented to Henry Bowen in 1863 by Daniel Austin (the significance of which has been lost to us), a lovely swan-necked cup and saucer, and the Imperial Order of the Lion and Sun, awarded to Herbert by the Shah of Persia when he was minister plenipotentiary to that country. He was also presented with a gold snuff box with forty diamonds. Roseland Cottage does not have the snuff box.
