Spuyten Duyvil

Mary Louisa Bowen married George Holt, a New York lawyer and the brother of Ellen Holt, Henry Bowen’s second wife, in 1871. Theodore Roosevelt appointed Holt a federal judge in 1903. Mary and George lived in Spuyten Duyvil, a residential area of the Bronx along the Hudson River. They are pictured here in their parlor. In her diary, Mary wrote that “Our evenings are very delightful sitting around our open wood fire in the parlor with our charming old fashioned fire-place and the brass andirons to give us constant pleasure.”
