Stable, Needing Care

When it arrived at Historic New England, the crib was structurally stable but the finish on the veneered walnut surface was badly degraded, missing in places, and needed cleaning. The purpose of varnish is to protect and enhance wood, but a seriously degraded finish can do neither.
