The Solarium

Though we have no record of how the solarium was used at Roseland Cottage, solariums at that time would take advantage of a southern exposure to heat water in large bottles, which would give off just enough warmth at night to keep plants alive. Plastered walls provided insulation, trapping that warmth inside. Given the volume of gardening, both floral and vegetable, at Roseland Cottage, a solarium was an asset. It was probably added to the outbuilding in the early 1900s.
