Trompe l’oeil Arches

Trompe l’oeil, meaning to trick the eye, is when painters create the illusion of something appearing to exist in three dimensions. Here, in the arch between the two parlors, decorative painters have created Gothic tracery that seems to be carved but in reality is flat.
